Mum shares way to get grubby shoes looking new – but people are horrified

People have been left horrified by a woman’s method to clean her family’s shoes.

There is nothing more satisfying than opening a brand new box of crisp white trainers. Equally, when you go out in the dazzling new shoes, the stunning colour fades pretty quickly; they have to withstand all kinds of dirt and terrain.

Unlike our clothes, we can’t simply throw a pair of trainers in the washing machine and expect them to look perfect. One woman insists that one kitchen appliance could do the trick. She insists it is the “secret to clean shoes” that her mother taught her.

The mum, known as The Daily Nelly online and boasts 4.4million followers thanks to her viral hacks, filmed her mother putting a range of different trainers in the top shelf of her dishwasher. Alongside some plates and bowls, she also added some trainers to the bottom shelf, before adding detergent and putting it on a ‘tough’ cycle.

In total, she managed to get seven pairs of shoes in the machine. The content creator’s mum, from Minnesota in the US, said: “They are going to clean up so beautifully, you’ll be so impressed.”

Once the cycle had finished, the mum and daughter duo showed off their shiny trainers which had turned from looking old and dirty, to brand new and crispy white.

The video, which has raked in 1.2million views, was inundated with comments as people were left gobsmacked. “Prime example of why I don’t eat at anyone else’s home,” commented one individual.

“What’s wrong with a washing machine?,” one confused person added. One other weote: “With the f***ing dishes. Yes, the things we learn on TikTok is that people are f***ing disgusting.”

“With the dishes is diabolical,” said another. “Absolutely not,” said another. “I’m traumatised,” said another.

People should be aware that while your shoes might get clean from the dishwasher, it could ruin your shoes. It is generally not recommend to put leather shoes in a dishwasher, but rubber-based shoes could work on a gentle cycle to prevent damage.

Previously, cleaning guru, Lynsey Crombie, appeared on ITV’s This Morning revealed that hot steam which then melted the glue that held the fabric of her trainers together.

She said: “I had to try it, and do you know what? One of my trainers had a little bit of duck poo on it from walking the dog and I thought, ‘those are the ones to put in, lets give this a go’. Do you want to see the result? I don’t recommend this.”

Video footage was then shown of Lynsey putting her shoes in the dishwasher, before it cut back to the studio where the Queen of Clean was showing off her destroyed trainers. She added: “Split there, the inside has all come out, and the pink [on the back] dyed the laces as well.”

The Spruce advises: “Do not use your dishwasher to wash tennis shoes or athletic shoes. The high-heat drying cycle can shrink and melt shoe parts.”
